They said they do not believe the cold was a factor and that the tram was running without issues in colder temperatures earlier in the day.
Forty-eight people have been rescued from two stopped trams on Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire.
The people who were stuck had to rappel to safety through a hatch in the bottom of the trams, the station says.
The trams became stuck shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday at Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway in Franconia in the White Mountains.
“We’ve determined that there was an issue within the engine compartment that caused the brakes to come on and stay on”, Keeler said.
“There’s a door at the bottom in the middle of the auto that opens up”, he told necn.
John DeVivo, Cannon Mountain Ski Area general manager, said it was his first evacuation experience. “Sort of a belay system”.
“We started going for about 30 seconds and then boom!”
Cannon Mountain staff and firefighters used a rope and cables to lower trapped passengers down one by one.
Although the ordeal lasted several hours and blankets had to be sent up to keep guests warm amid freezing temperatures, no injuries were reported. “Some cold feet, but not even any frostbite reported”.
The tramway was expected to be closed until 8:15 a.m. Monday.
No one was injured or sickened. She also said the head of lift operations, who was on board the tram, gave her coat to Remy.
