Novak was shipped to Oklahoma City at the trade deadline past year before being traded from OKC to Denver on Thursday.

Now with news looming that the Nuggets will workout a buyout with Steve Novack the trade essentially dwindles down to Augustin and two second round picks for Foye.

Foye was in the previous year of his contract with the Nuggets.

The Thunder did this largely as a vote of confidence for rookie Cameron Payne, who slowly supplanted Augustin as the team’s backup point guard. Foye now holds the league’s 19th-worst PER, and he has only averaged six points on a poor 35 percent shooting in 19.8 minutes per game.

According to Yahoo, the trade will save $8 million in luxury taxes for the Thunder, whose tax bill will drop from $22.1 million to 14.1 million.

There is a reason Tim Connelly and company got contract extensions, and with today’s trade they have further shown there dedication to making this franchise a successful one in the near future. Foye averaged 6.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 20 minutes per game through 54 games with the Nuggets during the 2015-16 season.

The Nuggets accomplish a few things with this deal, the first of which is getting rid of a player in Foye, who’s 32 years old and production’s been dipping the past couple of years. Foye has spent the last three seasons with Denver and has been a pro’s pro in his time with the team. He will be joining his seventh team in eight seasons. For the Nuggets, this isn’t much of a loss for a team that is looking to build from the bottom, and the two second-round picks are valuable assets for their rebuild. The Nuggets will receive the Thunder’s and Charlotte Hornets‘ second-round picks in this year’s draft. Portland also received a 2021 second-round pick.
