The reigning Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks visited the White House on Thursday morning and President Barack Obama had one request during his speech.
The Blackhawks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning last season becoming the most dominant team in the National Hockey League since 2009.
“It marked the third such visit for many players, coaches and team executives, including captain Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson, coach Joel Quenneville, Wirtz and team president John McDonough, as they also visited the White House after capturing the “10 and “13 titles. The celebration will take part in the East Room at 10 a.m. Central Time.
“It is always fun to have the Stanley Cup here”, Obama said.
An avid sports fan, Obama credited the team’s strong performance to the front office.
In addition to the jersey, the Blackhawks also presented Obama with a miniature Stanley Cup and a United Center parking pass at Thursday’s ceremony.
And, he added, “It is also, by the way, a tribute to the head of scouting who just told me that he could help me pick my Supreme Court Justice”. Before I was president, I just want to point out ” the Blackhawks had gone nearly half a century without seeing this thing.
The president made mention of several players on the star-studded team, but he took a particular interest in backup goalie Scott Darling. He even gave a shout-out to his North Side rivals, the Cubs. He was given a lifetime parking pass to the United Center, the Blackhawks home rink, and it was joked that he should catch a game during his upcoming free time after his term is over.
Obama said the gift was the “best” he’s ever gotten at the White House, although he followed up that remark by saying he may sell it on eBay.
“I haven’t given up hope on the Bulls or the White Sox or the Bears”, Obama said.
