Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins has signed a four-year contract extension with the team; the amount has yet to be disclosed.
Jenkins had one year left on his deal. In addition to Jenkins, the Eagles have agreed to contract extensions with Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Lane Johnson and Vinny Curry.
The Eagles have been busy this offseason, spending more than $187 million in contract extensions. It gives you incentive or more “want to” to be in this building and be an Eagle.
Jenkins has started all 33 games with the Eagles, including the playoffs. Meanwhile, Jenkins was credited with a team-high 233 tackles over the last two seasons.
Jenkins participated in all seven of a possible 2,374 snaps with the Eagles.
Jenkins has emerged as the leader of the Eagles’ defense, and he enjoyed arguably the best season of his career in 2015. Jenkins said he would like to see Thurmond and Bradford back, but he didn’t get any indication of how things will go there from his contract discussions. Typically the third contract is less than the second deal. That average makes him the sixth-highest-paid safety in the National Football League according to average annual value following Earl Thomas, Devin McCourty, Jairus Byrd, Eric Berry and Dashon Goldson. Jenkins is looked at as one of, if not the, team spokesmen, so Pederson was smart to lock him up as they transition from Pederson and away from Kelly. “I’m trying to get in line just like everybody else”, Jenkins said then, per Jeff McLane of Philly.com.
I see you @MalcolmJenkins couldn’t be happier for you and your family!
“They’ve allowed me to be very vocal and have input on what we run and I think it’s because they trust that I studied enough to have a voice”, he said.
“His versatility freed me up a lot”.
Jenkins isn’t sure how he’ll fit into the schemes of Jim Schwartz, the new defensive coordinator.
“I think so. You talk about just the time on the field, I think so”, he said.
Despite his lack of stardom, Jenkins has been a very reliable defensive back for both the Eagles and New Orleans Saints since he was taken in the first round in the 2009 NFL Draft. We saw that when this team is focused and plays together, they can beat anybody in the league.
