ACC reprimands Duke’s Grayson Allen for tripping Florida State player

The ACC has officially reprimanded Duke’s Grayson Allen for what appears to be a trip against Florida State’s Xavier Rathan-Mayes at the end of Duke’s victory over the Seminoles Thursday night. The Hokies shot 60.9 percent in amassing 46 points after intermission to deal the Seminoles a fourth straight defeat, marking their longest losing streak since a five-game skid in February 2007. Two of those games were one point victories.

That status only increased after he not only hit a last second, game winning buzzer beater, but also seemed to perhaps travel once or twice on the way to the basket. And seeing how Grayson is only a sophomore, we should be in for a couple years worth of Allen-hate.

He already fits college basketball’s most vilified archetype: the cocky, white Duke player. But stack them up and then put them next to a player with DUKE across his chest, and they become a social media firestorm. The 74-48 defeat against Wake Forest showed just how far the Eagles roster is from even being somewhat competitive in the ACC, as the Demon Deacons began the game on a 37-4 run, and never looked back. In that span the lightly tested freshman drew a charge, grabbed four rebounds, threw down a dunk and had the Cameron Crazies chanting his last name.

Florida State (16-11, 6-9) has stumbled recently. Louisville won the game by holding a big advantage over Duke in paint scoring (36-22) and forcing 18 Blue Devils turnovers. Smith was added to the coaching staff earlier this week and made his coaching debut in this game.

Allen also said Thursday night that he and freshman Brandon Ingram, as Duke’s top two scorers, have to play physical because teams game plan to knock them off their games.

Florida State hosts No. 23 Notre Dame on Saturday. Pittsburgh and Syracuse were both on the bubble, but in better position than most to make the field of 68 come Selection Sunday.
