United lurching from 1 humiliation to another under Van Gaal

February 28 22:33 2016

Former Newcastle striker and current BBC Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer was the latest to have his say in the wake of Man United’s shambolic 2-1 Europa League defeat at the hands of Danish champions FC Midtjylland on Thursday evening.

The defeat has deepened the Old Trafford club’s crisis as Van Gaal’s side are already lagging behind in their bid to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

He has impressed the Old Trafford hierarchy with the way he has spearheaded Spurs’ title bid, while United stumble under van Gaal. But this is as incompetent a group of players as we have seen for a long time, so they let Midtjylland back in the game before half-time.

Add FC Midtjylland – a team formed as recently as 1999 and with 8,000 followers on Twitter compared to United’s 7 million – to the list of so-called minnows to have conquered United this season.

United face the struggling League One side Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Monday.

“He’s done everything he can for Manchester United and for the England national team and if he moves to China he’d be on £500,000-a-week, £2m a month!”

Sean Bones, vice-chairman of the Manchester United Supporters” Trust, said: “I have never heard our supporters sing songs like that in all the games I have been to. “If we are at our best then we should win the game, but it is not as easy as that”.

“When Louis van Gaal came in he was talking an bad lot about the philosophy, but as yet I don’t think anyone has been able to distinguish the philosophy”.

At the start of the second half Lingard blasted into the stand and – after Romero saved another Sisto shot – Mata headed wide.

“Allegri at Juventus is doing a great job, I can’t quite understand why everything is concentrated so much on [Giggs and Mourinho]”.

The Dutchman said De Gea was forced out by a knee problem.

Statistics show United have won just nine games out of their last 27 games to suggest the road they are in is an unknown territory.

After the win, Onuachu admitted that his side perhaps caught their Premier League opponents off guard. So while we’d like to see United lift a trophy this season, I doubt we have a chance in the Thursday night competition (though I’d be glad to be proved wrong).
