The reaction, both in the live audience – where singer The Weeknd was shown on camera looking stunned – and on social media, was one of confusion, according to ABC. Most sites are calling the Clueless actress’ appearance and quip at the Oscars boycott, “cringeworthy”.
Over on Twitter viewers blasted the segment, with one writing: “That Stacey Dash piece was SO awkward”.
– DL Hughley (@RealDLHughley) February 29, 2016 Who approved this foolery? We hope you do too, when Trump crashes and burns come election time. But according to Amobee Brand Intelligence, none of the other winners in the top categories even broke into the top five moments overall on Sunday night.
“You might be watching the Oscars and wondering why someone named Stacey Dash just walked across the stage”, she wrote.
And she’s owning it!
In the backstage video, Dash says she made the Oscars cameo because she wanted to, and because Rock asked her to do it. But the backlash that she received was in the form of a lot of “mean tweets”. Dash called the boycott “ludicrous” and said it implied there was no need for Black History Month or the BET network. “Haven’t we had more than just one month’s worth of accomplishments?” she asked.
Chris Rock did an admirable job as host, delving right into the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in his monologue, referring to the Oscars as the “White People’s Choice Awards”.
“Which brings me to the joke“, she stated. “I’m sure there were no black nominees some of those years”.
The “Clueless” actress wrote that she prefers to be a “free-thinking” black person, instead of a “cookie cutter” African-American who simply follows what everyone else is doing.
Why? Well, black people should support black candidates, I was told. Dash has been a polarizing figure since she made the transition from beloved 1990s actor to conservative pundit known for taking controversial stances on issues affecting people of color.
