Mexico says 11 pregnant women infected with Zika

The announcement comes about a month after state officials launched a preemptive strategy to combat the virus.

The newest case involved a woman in Hudson County who had acquired the virus while visiting Honduras.

On Feb. 26, the CDC reported six confirmed and probable cases of sexual transmission of the mosquito-borne Zika virus from male travelers to affected areas to female non-travelers. Because of the possible association between Zika in pregnant women and certain birth defects, it is recommended that pregnant women contact their healthcare provider about travel. Many people who are infected will not experience symptoms.

The Zika virus is spread by mosquitos, such as the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

It is native mainly to tropical Africa, with outbreaks in Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

There is no risk of transmission of the disease by the child, according to Dallin Peterson, Utah epidemiologist for the Zika virus.

“The antibodies cross the placenta barrier”, Bhayani said, and can lead to microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with brain damage and small heads.

“I don’t think we’re going to be able to stop the Zika outbreak”, said Steve Waterman, of the CDC told the Washington Post.

For anyone who does plan to visit the affected countries, prevention is the best approach to avoiding Zika virus infection.

Symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes, muscle pain, and headache. That kind of mosquito does not live in Colorado.

On February 1 the World Health Organisation declared Zika virus a public health emergency of global concern due to clusters of microcephaly and other neurological disorders in some areas affected by Zika.
