RGIII released by Redskins

March 07 20:00 2016

The Washington Redskins have released quarterback Robert Griffin, III.

As mentioned earlier, RG III also won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors over the Indianapolis Colts’ No. 1 pick that year, Andrew Luck, and was once considered the face and future of the Redskins franchise.

In the end, no team was willing to take on a $16.15 million salary for next season.

None of those other decisions by general manager Scot McCloughan was as significant as that involving Griffin. Thank you to Dan Snyder, Bruce Allen, all the Skins coaches, training staff, equipment managers and everyone in the organization for giving me an opportunity to play this attractive game at the highest level here in Washington.

Griffin entered the 2015 season as the starter, but after an uneven preseason performance and a concussion that took place in the second exhibition game, the Redskins made an abrupt change, benching Griffin for fellow 2012 draft class member Kirk Cousins.

But in the fourth quarter, Griffin tore the ACL in his right knee.

Shanahan was harshly criticized for his handling of the injury to his young quarterback after Griffin re-injured his knee in playoffs, but once again returned to action while clearly hobbled. It seemed like a happy marriage, at first, but Griffin dislocated his ankle in Week 2 of the 2014 season. Gruden was critical of Griffin’s ability and he, too, sat the player.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Ryan Davis has signed his one-year tender offer.

Griffin all but confirmed the news with a tweet after the news broke. They were able to sneak into the playoffs last season due mainly to the poor play of their division, but had no real grip on their quarterback position as they went on to feature three quarterbacks throughout the 2015 season. No one took the bait, and now they’ve just decided to make the split official. After Cousins’ performance, Gruden proclaimed that he would be the new starting QB. “I know he grew a lot being a third-string quarterback here”. If Griffin can get over the ego hit of backing up two guys from his same draft in his career, this would be a fascinating fit.
