The Broncos and San Francisco 49ers have reportedly agreed to the framework of a deal for the 28-year-old quarterback, so Kaepernick could only be discussing one thing with Elway – a possible pay cut.
Kaepernick is due to make $11.9 million in 2016, already guaranteed as the 49ers kept him on the roster through April 1, not releasing him to save over $8 million in cap space. Kaepernick, who has continued to rehab in Colorado after having three surgeries to his shoulder and knee, can earn $400,000 if he takes part in 90 percent of offseason sessions that begin Monday, the Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows reports. San Francisco likely could be convinced to reconsider, but for a much better compensation package.
A high-level source says “it would take two seconds” for the teams to finalize the proposed deal.
When Colin Kaepernick gets sound (and free) advice, he knows when to take it. The Denver Broncos received picks Nos.
If Baalke and new coach Chip Kelly are dead set on keeping Kaepernick, why have they allowed him to meet twice with Elway – including once at the general manager’s house? He knows the Broncos offered Brock Osweiler $16 million annually before Osweiler bolted for Houston. So, while the Broncos’ pursuit of Kaepernick is real and has advanced well beyond trade-rumor status, it’s clear the Broncos get more leverage in this if they continue to show patience.
Kaepernick led the 49ers to an NFC title and Super Bowl XLVII appearance during the 2012 season, and to the NFC Championship Game in 2013.
Broncos apparently asked the 49ers if they would kick in the necessary cash to cover the gap. Colin Kaepernick’s hit for 2016 National Football League season is $15.9 million.
