US Loses to Colombia, Finishes 4th in Copa America

The U.S. matched its previous best finish in the tournament, when it lost to Colombia in the 1995 fourth-place game.

The U.S. performed better overall than it did in the 4-0 loss to Argentina, but the Colombian goal was eerily similar to the first one scored by the Argentines. It was a positive showing for the stars and stripes, who were a bit unlucky but end the tournament ahead of teams like Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay. Tim Howard is reported to start in net in place of Brad Guzan for the USA tonight. Each lost their respective match, so they played with third place on the line.

Colombia forward Dayro Moreno is a teammate of USA defender Michael Orozco on Mexico’s Club Tijuana.

This year’s special edition of the Copa America, which brought together teams from South America (CONMEBOL) and North, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF), was held in the United States for the first time.

This time, they’ll play for 3rd place in the Copa America Centenario. The market seems to be expecting some kind of Harlem Globetrotters gigglefest, but I think both teams will be keen to win this.

“The more times we can get to these stages, the closer we are to win titles”. United States of America were dominated by Argentina in a 4-0 loss, but at least they get key players back from suspension for their final match.

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann had blamed his side for being “too nice” against Argentina in the semi-finals, when they failed to register a single shot either on or off target. Colombia, a very good team, buried its one quality chance.

Both teams finished a man short, when American defender Michael Orozco and Colombian defender Santiago Arias were ejected for a confrontation in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. This tournament will leave an enduring legacy, however: It will serve for years as a reminder of the folly inherent in rejecting the USA bid for the 2022 World Cup in favor of the continuing fiasco of Qatar.

Jurgen Klinsmann and Geoff Cameron thought the team played well in the opener against Colombia, but they were bad. He is often thought of as the closest thing to “world class” that the U.S. has, but his position in the club may be slipping.

Howard was to make his 109th worldwide appearance, taking over from Brad Guzan, who had started the previous nine games.

Klinsmann welcomes back Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Alejandro Bedoya after suspension, while Colombia are without Carlos Sanchez. If it’s a Bobby Wood, a Yedlin, a John Brooks and others becoming stronger.

Though ending with consecutive losses isn’t ideal, the US learned a few things from this tournament, like Brad Guzan can be the No. 1 keeper, Clint Dempsey needs to play as long as he can walk and Michael Bradley still hasn’t found his form.

“We got to the semifinals which is good”. “All three players were suffering a lot because not being on the field against an opponent like Argentina”, said the 51-year-old German. The story was over pretty early in the game, as they conceded goals in the 3rd minute and again in the 32nd by a lovely free-kick by Messi.
