“I’ve said many times I enjoy and am proud to play for England and am interested to see who the next manager is and if selected then I’ll certainly be there”.
“We’ve got the farcical situation of Dan Ashworth picking the next England manager and I’m really not sure about his credentials either”.
Alan Shearer has called for a double act of Gareth Southgate and Glenn Hoddle to lead England in the wake of their “clueless and embarrassing” Euro 2016 exit.
Hoddle was in charge of England from 1996-1999, a spell that included the 1998 World Cup in France where the team reached the second round before losing on penalties to Argentina.
“Because, clearly among other things, there’s a psychological problem with our players, where they seem to get to a stage with worldwide football where they just can’t cope, and that’s manifest time and time again, year after year, in individual errors which you just wouldn’t expect from players”.
“He [Southgate] fits their remit; he has been with the U21s and he has been around the squad, so I would back Gareth Southgate if he was to go in there”, Shearer told BBC Sport. Though the win was marvelous to see for neutral fans, and life-changing for the citizens of Iceland, England knew at that point that they had become a footballing nation in turmoil. Immediately after the defeat, England manager Roy Hodgson placed his resignation from his post. “And in the end you have got to get into the fact we have got fewer and fewer English players to choose from”.
The FA are planning to speak to various foreign managers – including Arsenal‘s Arsene Wenger and the USA national team’s German boss Jurgen Klinsmann – and an overseas appointment looks the more likely result.
He has not managed for 10 years since leaving Wolves, but according to Wilkins he is nonetheless the man to take England forward and fulfil the potential of the current crop of players.
“It was a mixture of players massively under-performing, management and a team of staff not being able to make the big decisions at the right time and that includes before the game”.
He said he felt “fragile” after a long night, and spoke of his shock at elimination.
“I believe we ended up with the best candidate, someone who’s extremely credible, who had taken Switzerland to third in the world, who had global experience therefore, and who had a good club record”, he said. That’s what happens. Why do we not do well in competitions, in a tournament, when we won every game in qualifying? “He deserves another chance”.
