Von Miller, John Elway speak on phone about jump-starting contract talks

July 06 23:00 2016

According to two National Football League sources, Broncos general manager John Elway spoke with Miller and his representatives this past weekend, but the discussion was merely to reopen talks.

Peyton Manning is weighing in on the standoff in Denver. telling TMZ Sports he believes Von Miller WILL re-sign with the team.

The Broncos most likely wouldn’t be interested in matching an offer made to Miller because the relationship between the two sides would be all but over at that point, but the Broncos would be very interested in receiving the draft pick compensation.

With the deadline for signing franchise players to long-term deals fast approaching, the Denver Broncos appear to be ramping up their efforts to sign Von Miller to a long-term deal.

We’re a little under 10 days until these two need to agree to something, so there’s plenty of time. In the three other times besides Miller – Matt Prater (2012), Ryan Clady (2013) and Demaryius Thomas (2015) – Elway has reached a long-term deal before the season started. After making two strip-sacks in Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Miller got the Broncos’ exclusive franchise tag March 1. The Broncos offered $39.8 million in fully guaranteed money including signing bonuses and workout bonuses. Miller reportedly wants more than $60 mil guaranteed in the first 3 years. I don’t see him risking injury for the $14.129 million franchise tag with the money Cox got.
