Amid reports about an intense debate among Trump family members and aides as to who should be the running mate, Trump Jr. tweeted: “There’s literally none of the drama I’m reading about”.

After days of intense speculation, Trump made the announcement in a tweet Friday morning.

The state Republican committee would pick the candidate to oppose Democratic nominee John Gregg, the former Indiana House speaker who Pence narrowly beat in 2012.

Donald Trump’s pick of Mike Pence as his running mate on Friday offered the presumptive nominee’s conservative skeptics some much-needed assurance, with high-profile Republicans lauding the IN governor as an authentic and steady leader IN the party. The person was not authorised to discuss the deliberations publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Mr Pence had already flown to NY before Mr Trump announced the postponement.

The announcement originally had been planned for Friday morning in midtown Manhattan, but Trump delayed his plans after the truck attack in Nice, France, that left more than 80 people dead.

Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, said Friday: “I think that Mr Trump has reached a decision but he isn’t prepared to announce it yet”.

Pence was the favored choice of many Republican leaders, as well as some top advisers in Trump’s campaign, reflecting a desire to see the real estate mogul add a more traditional politician to the ticket.

A rollout in New York City had been planned for Friday at 11 a.m., but Trump tweeted Thursday evening that “in light of the frightful attack in Nice, France“, he was postponing that announcement.

Jon Thompson, a spokesman for the Republican Governors Association, said, “we are confident Indiana Republicans will select a strong new gubernatorial nominee who will win this November and build upon Governor Pence’s successful legacy of sound fiscal management and economic success”.

During his years in Congress, Pence was known for a calm demeanor and conservative record.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump (R) and Indiana Governor Mike Pence (L) wave to the crowd before addressing the crowd during a campaign stop at the Grand Park Events Center in Westfield, Indiana, July 12, 2016.

As governor, Pence came under fire after signing a so-called religious freedom bill that opponents said would have allowed businesses to discriminate against gays, but he later revised the legislation.

“It wasn’t a matter of taking a little time to rethink things”, Manafort said.

Pence has also been a free trade supporter and backs the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the proposed trade deal with Pacific Rim nations that Trump has pledged to block as a job-killer. The Republican convention kicks off in Cleveland Monday.

“I have my own campaign to run here starting this very minute“, Rokita said in the reception area of the Secretary of State’s office. “He is also a proven reformer with executive experience who understands how to work with Republicans on Capitol Hill”. But some of Trump’s children, who have been closely advising their father, were said to favor different candidates.
