A Kansas City police officer has died after he was shot this afternoon.
The prosecutor’s office identified the pair as Jamaal Lewis and Daqon Sipple, KCTV5 reports.
As an officer took one suspect into custody, Melton pursued the others. Simple, 18, had arrived there hours earlier and faces counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and use of a deadly weapon.
Two people were in custody in the aftermath of Melton’s death, though charges had not yet been filed by late Wednesday morning, police said in an email.
Zeigler said Melton was wearing a protective vest.
Melton’s death comes just after two targeted attacks led to the deaths of five police officers in Dallas, Tex. and three Baton Rouge, La. cops.
“Hate and anti-police speech has got to stop”, Zeigler said.

Mayor Mark Holland of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County also said during a Wednesday news conference that the community is still “healing and reeling” from the fatal shooting of a Kansas City, Kansas, officer in May, which was the first in the department in 19 years.

Melton’s age and how long he had served with the department have not been released.
He also said the attack isn’t part of the recent string of shootings in the US, but that “hate against police has got to stop”. Melton had also been awarded several military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster.
“Officers come to work every day knowing they may have to die in the line of duty”, Zeigler said. Detective Brad Lancaster, with the Kansas City Police Department, was shot and killed in May while investigating a suspicious person.
“We all need to worry that the national climate may foster greater fear and potentially enflame otherwise normal interactions and turn them into tragedies”, Holland said. “We know you share our pain”.
