Flyers sign Schenn to four-year, $20.5M deal

July 25 23:00 2016

Schenn’s deal is worth $20.5 million.

The 24-year-old had his most productive season as a pro in 2015-16, netting career highs in goals (26), assists (33) and points (59). He held a 49.78 score and venue adjusted 5-on-5 CF% and a minus-0.25 5-on-5 score and venue adjusted CF% Rel. Schenn was named the WHL Rookie of the Year in 2008.

Schenn has been with the Flyers since the 2011-12 season, when he was traded from the Los Angeles Kings organization in the deal that sent then-captain Mike Richards to the west coast.

The fact that this deal was agreed upon before arbitration is a very good thing for Schenn and the team.

The Kings selected Schenn with the fifth over pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. They also had similar numbers last season. All of Schenn’s scoring statistics – both recent and full-career – surpass those of Palmieri, making his $4.65 million cap hit and $23,500,000 total value the probable floor for a Schenn extension.

The two sides struck the deal just before going to arbitration. He made his National Hockey League debut in 2009 as an 18-year-old with the Los Angeles Kings after being signed to a 1 game emergency amateur deal. His brother, Luke Schenn, was a Flyer at the time, though he signed this summer with the Arizona Coyotes after a brief stint with the Kings.
