Indiana GOP leaders nearing vote on Pence ballot replacement

The United States would “absolutely” defend its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence told the PBS NewsHour on Thursday, appearing to contradict a statement from Donald Trump a day earlier about how he would treat the obligations of the decades-old military alliance.

Governor Mike Pence endorsed Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb for IN governor.

Pence withdrew from the race last week after the billionaire businessman and Republican presidential nominee plucked him to be his vice president. Several other top Republican officials and donors are also endorsing Holcomb. U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks, U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, State Sen.

The 22-member Republican State Committee meets at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to vote. Andy Downs, with the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics, says each candidate has a record that can be easily checked and vetted by the state committee. Pence is also preparing to play an active role on the fundraising circuit, tapping his strong connections to some of the GOP’s deepest pockets to help raise millions of dollars for the Trump campaign. The two candidates do not have the same stance on most issues except immigration reform, Al Jazeera notes.

“I’m pinching myself to make sure this is not a dream”, Jeff Cardwell, Indiana Republican Party Chairman, said.

“I am as honored today to receive Governor Pence’s support as I was when answering his call to serve at Lt. Governor”.

Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb, U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks and U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita all made a decision to run for governor and all attended the convention. Pence picked Holcomb after his 2012 running mate, Sue Ellspermann, resigned in March.

Advocates for Brooks say Pence’s endorsement and Holcomb’s letter come as the congresswoman was building considerable support within the committee.

But he added that Pence didn’t rule out lending assistance to another candidate if one is selected.

Flores said he believes Trump has what it takes to secure the country’s borders, stimulate the economy and rebuild the military – goals he says presumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will fail to accomplish.

Pence’s North Atlantic Treaty Organisation comments came during broad-ranging interview in which he touched on abortion, the future of the Supreme Court, and trade.

Pence's Indiana record more complicated than he says
