Snyder said that at 9:20 p.m. on Monday, 911 dispatchers received a call from a neighbor who said he was stabbed while trying to stop an assault at a home across the street from him.
When the first deputy arrived minutes later, she used her Taser on Harrouff, but it didn’t faze him, Snyder said.
Snyder said deputies found the man on top of the dead husband and it took several attempts and a dog to pull him off.
Authorities have not released the ages or identities of the victims or suspect, but the sheriff did note that the suspect knew the slain couple.
Michelle Mishcon, 53, and her husband John Stevens, 59, were killed by in the “inexplicable” attack, according to investigators.
The sheriff said at the press conference that Harrouff was “abnormally strong” during the alleged attack.
Snyder went into more detail about the crime with People, saying the first deputy arrived at the scene in the driveway of the couple’s Tequesta home and caught Harrouff in the horrific act. “It’s ‘I don’t know”‘.
Snyder said Harrouff had been eating dinner with his family at a restaurant a short distance away when he stormed off, apparently agitated about slow service. He says it took multiple deputies using a great deal of force and a K9 to subdue and restrain the man, who is said to be in his 20s.
He was taken to a hospital where, Snyder said, he made “animal-like” – noises including “grunting” and “growling” – and was largely incoherent. The sheriff’s office said Stevens appeared to fight back, but Harrouff had “weapons of opportunity”, meaning items around the garage, at his disposal.
A neighbor was stabbed and injured trying to intervene.
Furthermore, authorities are reportedly looking for a 26-year-old woman described as an “associate” of the suspect. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, he had not been jailed in Martin County, according to jail officials.
He added that deputies found Michelle dead in the garage.
The suspect was also taken to St. Mary’s, where he is receiving treatment for unspecified ailments.
He added that the suspect was under sedation at a Palm Beach County hospital. It was his nephew, Maddox said, calling to tell him his brother-in-law and his wife had been fatally stabbed in their Tequesta home.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to find out if it was Flakka“, Snyder said, but that won’t be known until toxicology reports are in.
