Dujardin became the second British woman to win three Olympic golds by retaining her individual title.

Two members of Friday’s gold-medal-winning German team took silver and bronze, as Isabell Werth and Weihegold scored 89.071 to finish ahead of world number one, Kristina Broring-Sprehe and Desperados on a score of 87.142.

“I am so overwhelmed”, she said afterward, “This is what I really love doing; I really enjoy the music and Valegro does, too”. “As soon as I got in there and trotted around the outside, Valegro gave me the most unbelievable feeling”, she said.

“I knew Charlotte had 93 or 94%, and Germany already won team gold, so with silver today I couldn’t ask for more, she said. I owe it to him to finish at the top”. Broring-Sprehe brings home her first individual Olympic title, Bronze.

Britain’s Carl Hester, a team-mate of Dujardin in the dressage team event when they won silver, came seventh (82.482%).

Charlotte said it felt like the 14-year-old knew she was emotional today.

“But he gave me a look before and then I knew everything was going to be fine”.

As Dujardin completed her dressage it seemed the horse was nearly dancing to Tom’s music and earlier a commentator remarked on the carnival feel the music brought to the contest. I did promise him after London (2012) that we would get married, and it never happened.

“It is a new freestyle”, Dujardin said. “I definitely want to go to Tokyo 2020 and we’ve got the world championships next year. When it comes to the Olympics they are looking into that quite deeply and I can live without a lawsuit from the Stevie Wonder company”, said Kittel, who ended in 18th place. “I had a really lovely time”.

For the musician, whose home is near Garstang, had composed the tune which accompanied her success in the Individual Grand Prix Freestyle contest.

“But it will be a huge achievement to try and get to another Olympic Games, whether you win or not, just getting here is a huge achievement”.

The Briton, as freestyle specialist and world champion in that event also, rode a near faultless display as the duo came together once more for Olympic glory.

And as she clinched her medal, Charlotte’s partner Dean Wyatt Golding, 37, a former South African long-distance runner, popped the question of a gold wedding ring.
