The driver of the bus, Denis Yasmir Amaya-Rodriguez of Honduras, did not have driver’s license, according to the State Patrol.
Matey says the dead include a local fire chief and a rear-seat occupant of a auto also hit by the bus.
A bus full of construction workers hit a firetruck on an elevated highway Sunday, killing two people and injuring about 40, Louisiana State Police said. She says Chief Spencer Chauvin (SHOH-vanh) was among three firefighters thrown off the raised section of Interstate 10 near LaPlace and into water below. The injured included the other two firefighters, as well as occupants of the bus, pickup truck, car, and a truck that the car was pushed into. A woman who answered the phone at AM Party Bus of New Orleans said she was only authorized to take booking calls.
St. John the Baptist Parish President Natalie Robottom said in a statement that Chauvin was “one of the bravest and most dedicated firefighters that I know”.
Police say that those on board were from New Orleans and were en route to Baton Rouge to assist with the flood recovery.
One firefighter is in critical but stable condition and the other has moderate injuries, the Advocate reported.
Police say that there were 30-40 passengers on the bus, all of which were reportedly injured with minor to moderate injuries.
A backseat passenger of a Toyota Camry also involved in the crash was declared deceased at the scene, according to Louisiana State Police, and the driver and front passenger were transported to local hospitals.
The bus was headed to Baton Rouge to provide relief from the massive flooding in Louisiana.
Criminal charges are pending, as investigators are still searching for who owns the bus.
