Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, in a statement released Tuesday, said Mr. Kaine and Mrs. Clinton are out-of-touch with Michiganders and have made “pie in the sky” promises.
A Clinton White House would aim to make college debt free for everybody, and public colleges free for households earning less than $125,000 a year, and make refinancing of debt easier, Kaine said. Kaine was born in St. Paul.
After landing at Minneapolis-St.
According to the campaign, Clinton was diagnosed wth a mild form of non-contageious bacterial pneumonia and is under treatment with the antibiotic Levaquin.
He then headed to the U of M, where he talked to students and posed for photos. He did not interact with reporters.
“I obviously knew from Monday, when she was coughing, that she had a cough, and it was likely an allergy”, Kaine said.
Kaine’s visit comes as Clinton, 68, spends her second day off of the campaign trail as she recovers from pneumonia.
If voters reject Trump’s call for a border wall and an end to immigration from certain countries, Kaine thinks the GOP could change their minds about immigration.
“So, she was immediately responding back and joking around-I know you’re thinking about her and I am too”, Kaine said.
In a brief discussion of music preferences, Kaine told a group of students that he was a “massive Replacements fan”.
Students spoke with Kaine one-on-one on a variety of issues, from mental health awareness to Native American issues.
Aasim Ali, a freshman from Plymouth, brought up “Islamophobia” and the terror watch list with great animation while talking with Kaine. Ali wasn’t satisfied with Kaine’s response.
“It was nice to be able to meet him, but … he didn’t really answer the questions”, Ali said afterward. “He was kind of avoiding it”, Ali said. “What’s your message for those in our area that are still unsure about who they are going to vote for?”
Karen Finney, Kaine’s communications director, said Kaine was in town for a private fundraiser. A flier for the event listed contribution levels ranging from $500 for advocates up to $27,000 for reception co-hosts. He was one of three ardent supporters who asked Holton about Clinton’s health in the event’s short mingling window before Holton was whisked off for her next stop.
But Holton acknowledged both Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump have high unfavorable ratings among millennials and other voters.
While the Clinton campaign has been organized in the state for months, and Trump has a campaign staffer in Minnesota as well, neither campaign has paid it the same attention they give battleground states.
