Clinton, Trump look to overcome weaknesses on debate stage

September 27 23:05 2016

“Democrat Hillary Clinton had a four-percentage point advantage in support over Republican Donald Trump ahead of their first USA presidential debate, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos national tracking poll released on Friday”.

So with all those viewers, the outcome of the November 8 election surely depends upon this debate and the two that follow next month.

Clinton and Trump have clear political and stylistic objectives during their first debate Monday, the first of three such showdowns certain to influence the race in its final six weeks.

Levesque agrees. “With the election so close and tightening this debate on Monday … is really going to be a pivot point for the presidential election”. Al Gore’s audible sighs in a 2000 debate were seen as discourteous to George W. Bush.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t this time, Republicans and Democrats and even some political scientists say. “I’d like to start off by saying that because that would be my intention”. He went on to become a senior adviser to Clinton at the State Department. That was more than twice the proportion of uncommitted voters at the same point in the 2012 election between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney. “This first one especially”.

Both candidates have policy gaps to fill in and changes in position to explain.

“I’ve gotten to know Hillary and seen her work and seen her in tough times and in good times”. Tim Kaine took a dig at Cruz for expressing support despite the personal insults Trump rained down on him during the primaries. Your Twitter feed will be filled with significant moments before you’ve even had time to digest them. He doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies.

With neither candidate a clear favorite on issues like creating jobs or keeping the nation safe, almost a third of uncommitted voters said they may be more likely to vote for a third-party candidate than for either Clinton or Trump. PolitiFact has examined 258 Trump statements and 255 Clinton statements and ranked them on a scale ranging from “True” to “Pants on Fire”. At right, Republican Donald Trump participates in a March 3 primary debate in Detroit. The poll also had black voters giving Trump double-digit levels of support – 12 percent – a slight increase compared to other recent polls.

Clinton vacillated during an October 2007 debate in Philadelphia when she was asked if she supported her home state governor’s proposal to grant driver’s licenses to immigrants living in the country illegally.

Hindman said the conventional strategy for presidential debates is to solidify the candidate’s base, perhaps sway a few undecideds and avoid serious gaffes.

The McClatchy-Marist poll shows Clinton leading Trump on issues of immigration, trade, and terrorism but shows Clinton lagging behind Trump on issues of honesty and trust. “Or he might double down on what’s worked thus far”.

When he walked over to Clinton’s lectern during a debate that year – pointing angrily as he railed against outside spending – Lazio was widely criticized, including by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who slammed him for “trying to cow a female opponent with. muscular histrionics”.

I am not calling on news media to take a side; I’m just asking them to report what is actually happening, without regard to party.

Surveys indicate they are also the least likely to watch the debates. Looking back, the former NY1 anchor says he didn’t press harder partly because Clinton is a woman. “And Donald Trump is the only thing standing in her way”. It’s unclear whether they dislike him enough to vote for Clinton. “Any candidate who tells this many lies clearly can’t win the debate on the merits”, she insisted.

In dramatic reversal, Cruz to vote for Trump
