Guice helps LSU open Orgeron era with 42-7 win over Missouri

Death Valley at night is notorious for being one of the toughest environments in all of football. The team instead showed a complete lack of leadership and experience.

I am a huge fan of Ed Orgeron. “The more you win, the more that’s at stake”. You don’t see that often.

Missouri visits Tiger Stadium for the first time with the two teams having met on the gridiron just once before at the 1978 Liberty Bowl.

You could feel the electricity in the stadium“, Orgeron told reporters after the game, in reference to the overflow crowd of 102,071.

The Tigers lost at Auburn after replay officials nullified LSU quarterback Danny Etling’s winning 15-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Chark on the final play of regulation because the ball was snapped after time expired.

Missouri didn’t even stand a chance, from that moment on. I’ll take that play. “You wanna get ’em cranked up, make big plays.'” Orgeron said of Guice’s first TD that established early momentum that Missouri was unable to overcome. LSU’s 634 yards of total offense was a school record in a Southeastern Conference game.

Running back Derrius Guice, subbing for an injured Leonard Fournette, ran for a career-high 163 yards, scored three first-half touchdowns and helped Coach O and the Tigers (3-2, 2-1) jump out to 35-0 lead.

Darrel Williams spelled Guice nicely by gaining another 130 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns as well.

“We spread them out a little bit, and we started throwing the football to loosen them up on the run”, Orgeron said. The offense worked the field, mixing in doses of pass along with the run to set the tempo for the game. His passion and ability to completely change the offensive focus of this team has given this team hope that they can contend for meaningful postseason games. “Coach O did a great job this week getting us energized and excited”.

“The enthusiasm is spilling over from Coach O’s own enthusiasm.”

“.

Orgeron led the Tigers out of the tunnel just six days after Les Miles was relieved of his coaching duties.

“That’s ultimately what got Les Miles fired”, former LSU defensive lineman and SEC Network analyst Booger McFarland, who played for the Bucs, said on ESPN.

A blazing inferno might be a more appropriate analogy.

He answered by saying “We’ll we’re going to see. GO TI-GAHS!” Orgeon said, in his native Cajun / South Louisiana drawl.

“It’s a week-to-week season”, Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. Danny Etling attempted 27 passes for only 118 yards against Auburn, another disappointment for a squad that returns 17 starters from a year ago and was expected to contend for a national championship before its disastrous September.EXTRA POINTS1. “Every Saturday I have had a game, unless it was a bye week”. The good news is he has great talent on the outside ready to make plays for him if the offense opens up.

The Tigers went with a double reverse pass from Marvin Zanders to receiver Eric Laurent to quarterback Drew Lock. Eight of Missouri’s first 10 drives ended in a punt, and coach Barry Odom’s squad did not cross LSU’s 45-yard line until 10 minutes were left in the third quarter. Whether that’s an endorsement for Coach O or a criticism of Miles shouldn’t really matter.

“Minus a second, I think we’d be a 3-1 team”, Miles said.

No matter who lands at LSU, here’s the number to beat:.778.
