Hurricane Matthew made landfall in south-western Haiti yesterday, triggering major floods and forcing thousands to flee the path of the deadly storm that has already claimed two lives in the poorest country in the Americas.

One of the boats lifted out by crane Tuesday at the Charlottetown Yacht Club.

Bottled water flew off supermarket shelves along Florida’s Atlantic Coast and SC prepared to evacuate more than 1 million people as the nation girded for Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful storm to smash through the region in nearly a decade.

That protocol could include an evacuation notice, he said, but in this case the club has only sent an advisory.

Haley said state officials would reverse lanes on major evacuation routes in SC. He moved to Florida from Montana in 2007, so Matthew would be his first storm. People will need to be 100 miles inland from the coast, and Haley said she expects the evacuation to begin at 3 p.m. EDT Wednesday. The storm is heading toward Cuba and the southeastern coast of Florida.

She said the buildings could barely withstand a rainstorm, let alone winds of 145 miles per hour in a category IV hurricane.

Hurricane Hermine became the first to strike Florida since Wilma in 2005 when it hit the eastern Panhandle on September 2 as a Category 1 storm, causing one death, storm surge damage to beachfront homes and downed trees and powerlines.
