A Cubs fan’s confidence and anxiety heading into the postseason

October 07 01:03 2016

Yu Darvish, who pitched the 2012 wild-card game against the Orioles, had the best ERA on the staff in September at 4.40 and that was after a 0.64 in his last two starts.

On Wednesday, all eyes will be on Citi Field in NY as the Mets will host the San Francisco Giants in the NL Wildcard. You don’t win 103 games without some highly functioning top talent.

But as this October begins, they are the focal point of what is a fascinating postseason that will begin on Tuesday with the AL Wild Card game. But it won’t be a walk in the park.

Cubs fans have been waiting 108 seasons for their team to break its championship curse and believe that 2016 is their year.

Opening the window a bit wider to consider all 94 teams that won 100 games in a season since 1903, only 33 won the World Series, the last being the 2009 Yankees. The biggest difference, of course, is the Red Sox won their division and the Angels finished next-to-last in theirs!

The Mets’ first home game of the 2015 World Series is the most expensive World Series ticket on record, based on SeatGeek’s data.

Ask the 2004 Cardinals, who were baseball’s best with 105 regular-season wins. Coincidence or not, The Mets will play the Red Sox 30 years after their last World Series meeting (I hope). At time of writing, the American League playoff seeding has been set. The Sept. 15 contest in which the Cubs could have clinched the National League Central title (they ended up losing) averaged an 11.2, becoming CSN Chicago’s highest-rated sports broadcast ever.

Or the 2001 Seattle Mariners, who matched the 1906 Cubs with 116 wins. The victor of that game will go on to play the Chicago Cubs, who, as we all know by now, have the best record in baseball.

Again, this is not to say the Cubs won’t win it all.

We’ll know by no later than Saturday, that’s what I think. The LA lefty has dominated hitters in recent years – except in the postseason. Boston give Ortiz the best sendoff in Red Sox history and the Cubs get to wait till next year. The question isn’t so much whether they’ll win the World Series-it’s how could they not?

Cameron: Wow the desire to pick Big Papi is nearly too much to resist, but in the spirit of debate give me the Cleveland Indians. The Dodgers’ rotation is thin after that and the Game 4 starter could be teenager 20-year-old Julio Urias or 24-year-old prospect Jose De Leon. Maybe they will even meet in the World Series, in a rematch of the 1986 Series, where the Mets won in seven games.

The Red Sox looked like the best team in the AL before they had the AL East title in hand, and that’s what opposing teams should expect to see in the playoffs.

Now that I have narrowed the National League down to the Mets, ruled out the Red Sox, and decided the Indians are my American League pick, I will add one more thing. The Red Sox are known for their potent offense, led by MVP candidate Mookie Betts and DH David Ortiz. Tonight, the American League Wild Card game will be played by the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays. However, Puig comes into the post season on a tear having resurrected his season just when it seemed he no longer had a future with the Dodgers.

We know Bumgarner pitched on short rest, but that was in the World Series.

Does having the best record hinder World Series chance?
