Reports suggest that Smith can do great things with the Cavaliers and can be of great help in defending their title. Where do they go from here?
Smith is represented by Cleveland-based agent Rich Paul, also the agent for LeBron James and Tristan Thompson.
LeBron turned it on in the NBA Finals and what he did was nothing short of legendary. He arrived with a reputation for being hard, but Smith has fit in smoothly with the Cavs and was a key contributor in June when Cleveland overcame a 3-1 deficit in the finals to beat the Golden State Warriors. But the Cavaliers did give us plenty of reason to look forward to the regular season.
Smith has been an unrestricted free agent since July.
Move over, J.R. Smith, as the Cleveland Cavaliers may have worsened the contract dilemma after again signing another player ahead of him, and this time, it is Toney Douglas. He made 44 percent of his 3-pointers in the playoffs, as the Cavs marched to the first championship in franchise history. Love makes significantly more money than Oladipo, and the only way Oklahoma City could make this trade legal under National Basketball Association rules would be to include center Enes Kanter in their offer.
However, with only a few weeks left and the training camp already started, the Cavs and Smith quickly need to negotiate and start working on some great hardcourt plans.
Guard J.R. Smith of the Cleveland Cavaliers. There’s a chance that he ends up signing somewhere else and that would leave the Cavs with a big hole in their starting lineup. After all, even working without Kevin Love and mostly without Kyrie Irving, Blatt’s Cavs created a competitive 2015 NBA Finals prior to losing during Blatt’s rookie year with Cleveland. That’s a good enough reason for anyone in Cleveland to dance. Last Monday at Cavaliers Media Day David Griffin spoke to the media and told them that “We have put together a very aggressive offer for J.R”.
