About 150 people were rescued by boats from flooding in the riverside village of Nichols on Monday while across SC the oceanfront hamlet of Edisto Beach began the long work of recovering from what officials called the worst hurricane hit in nearly 40 years.

One in Sampson County on Saturday when a male driver hydroplaned his vehicle and struck a tree. Two others were found submerged in their cars. That brings the overall US death toll from the storm to at least 21.

That’s down from about 400,000 late Monday and down from the total of about 850,000 customers who lost power during last weekend’s storm. It could take up to a week to completely restore power.

But officials warned the pace would slow significantly in the next few days as crews start to work on coastal areas where there was major damage to the power grid.

Deputy Public Safety Director Scott Brooks said that crews worked until about 2 a.m. Tuesday to get sandbags in place to reduce the threat at Woodlake Dam near Vass. “I told them, ‘Guys, this is barely a 1, keep this in mind, ‘ ” Sinclair said.

Brooks says he doesn’t know how quickly that inspection can occur.

State resources are stretched to their limit, McCrory said.

Florida reported four deaths from Matthew, and Georgia and SC reported three each. He will tour the damage in Fayetteville Monday afternoon.

The recruits were moved for their safety in the days before Hurricane Matthew hit SC, though the future Marines were able to continue “limited training” at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in Georgia, Carroll said.
