Watch Cam Newton’s terse press conference after another Carolina Panthers’ loss

It’s not a surprise that the question that drove Newton from his microphone after a laconic, 90-second press conference, was about having to helplessly view that final Saints drive from the sideline.

Newton’s presser lasted only 1 minute and 26 seconds, almost a minute shorter than when he abruptly left the Super Bowl press conference.

“You just never know, it’s like they tried to give us a trick or a treat, and they gave us a treat!” said Shedrick Roy, who watched the game at the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Seattle’s Steven Hauschka kicked a 44-yard field goal with 1:57 remaining to lift the Seahawks over Atlanta 26-24.

The Saints improved 2-3 overall.

In Week 5, Roberto Aguayo’s kick as time expired gave Tampa Bay a 17-14 win over Carolina. As expected, both offenses were firing on all cylinders as New Orleans finished with 523 total yards to Carolina’s 406. The Saints ran a tight end end-around for a touchdown on the opening drive of the game, ten different players caught a pass, and Brees threw the ball 49 times.

Drew Brees threw four touchdowns.

Still, Brees brimmed with optimism, as he tends to do. Some will say the traditional athlete-reporter model, in which we poke and prod emotional humans minutes after gut-wrenching losses on national television, is irreparably broken.

Also in any “Saintsy” win, anything less than magnificent Drew Brees quarterbacking means they would have lost. “I was just doing my job”. Sometimes it lasts a bit more than one season. Brees threw for 465 yards and four touchdowns Sunday while breaking a tie with Peyton Manning for the most regular season 400+ yard passing games.

“A little hoarse, excuse me”, Payton said. His elite numbers back him up. Coby Fleener scored two remarkable touchdowns: his first carry in his National Football League career was a jet sweep for 2 yards and a TD. “It’s not like it’s something you see every few weeks”. The Panthers surrendered 41 points, while Cam accounted for three touchdowns.

Afterward, Saints coach Sean Payton defended Lutz, saying the undrafted rookie from Georgia State had earned a spot on the 53-man roster with a workout for the ages.

“We won the game but I don’t have a good taste in my mouth”. “I feel like we are”.

The Situation: The Panthers faced 4th-and-4 and could either go for it, or attempt a 47-yard field goal to cut the Saints lead to 11. Lutz had missed from 53 earlier in the game, but he nailed the game victor with plenty of space to spare. He’s got the moxie.

“He made some really good decisions, ” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. He showed poise in the fourth quarter while marching the Cowboys on a seven-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Cole Beasley for an 18-point lead. He had a 98-yard TD in Week 1.
