Bitter presidential rivals Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have one more face-to-face showdown before Election Day.
The Al Smith dinner is an annual fundraiser for Catholic charities, and has historically featured politicians of both parties exchanging good-natured jabs and making self-deprecating jokes. And they’re supposed to make it amusing.
Clinton’s speech, which included more self-depricating jokes, was more well-received by the audience. During the primary, Rubio repeatedly called out Trump for seeking the presidency based on a self-interested business career.
Clinton strongly endorsed Roe v. Wade, sharply attacked the Citizens United decision that undercut campaign finance restrictions and stressed that she wanted justices who would stand with ordinary citizens against the wealthy and the powerful.
But he added: “If I win”.
“That feeling when you win three straight debates”. “Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a four”.
“[Some Republicans] say Donald doesn’t have any polit-cies (sic)”.
But she acknowledged her opponent’s health too: “Donald is healthy as a horse”.
“But I ask you, why shouldn’t Hillary Clinton resign from the race?” “My Social Security payroll contribution will go up, as will Donald’s – assuming he can’t figure out how to get out of it”.
Clinton was pretty cutting at times: “It’s unbelievable I’m up here after Donald”.
“I just had a call today with the campaign and the DNC”. We’ve accepted the outcomes when we may not have liked them.
Two Democratic consultants shown in the video are no longer affiliated with the Clinton camp. It’s traditionally the last time the major party candidates share the stage before the election. “They must be holding him hostage somehow”.
The two candidates, engaged in possibly the most contentious presidential election in more than a century, sat nearly next to each other on the dais at the Waldorf Astoria ballroom, separated only by New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan seated between them. Cameras caught him scowling. The Republican attack on ACORN-largely based on the “reports” of scam artist James O’Keefe-were meant to suggest that Obama’s victory was at least partly the result of fraud, and hence the Obama presidency itself was illegitimate. But I have had a few glimpses of this man at his best.
Obama returned the favor, lauding McCain’s military service, which included several years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
In 2012, Mitt Romney raised more than $337 million at this point in the campaign. “I will keep you in suspense”. “And that’s how it is for me”.
“What was omitted and what I constantly repeated to the infiltrators was that my team and I work together to make sure everyone stays safe while exercising their rights”, Ms. Rodriguez said.
He may think he knows what he is dealing with, but I was reminded by a colleague recently of John F. Kennedy’s warning in his 1961 inaugural that “those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside”. Don’t be naive. One of the big issues that came up last night, was the fact that the Clinton campaign has paid people to disrupt, violently, our rallies, and to incite absolute total bedlam.
“There is nothing amusing about the stakes in this election”.
“Remember, we are competing in a rigged election”, he told supporters in Wisconsin on Monday.
Compared to previous brawls, the debate got off to a subdued but oddly substantive start.
