Jets turn to Geno Smith to start at quarterback vs. Ravens

Injuries can happen and a demotion can occur faster than a NY minute as frustration continues to build. In Smith’s young career, he has thrown 27 touchdowns and 36 interceptions while completing under 58 percent of his passes.

While Fitzpatrick was holding out, Smith was running the offense.

Fitzpatrick has played so badly, the Jets are probably looking at him the same way they looked at Smith previous year. “We have two evenly good quarterbacks and Ryan wasn’t playing as well so we made a decision to go with Geno”, New York head coach Todd Bowles said. “We’re trying to get a spark somewhere”. We hadn’t put any points up.

I don’t really know what we’ll see in Week 14, but given that both teams are now 1-5, it could be a huge showdown for draft pick supremacy.

Bowles inherited Smith in 2015 and positioned him to become the starter, but everything changed when Enemkpali punched Smith in a dispute over a $600 plane ticket.

“It’s possible”, Bowles said Tuesday on that conference call when asked if Petty or Hackenberg could play.

“Little bit of both”, Bowles said. This means Fitzpatrick, who hasn’t led the Jets to a winning game since Week 2, will now be Smith’s backup QB. “That will not be a problem if he plays”. Neither have significant playing time, of course, but it does seem that the Jets, with very long odds to even make the postseason, would at least be interested in finding out if either one is the future.

“I’d say he’s day-to-day”, Harbaugh said of Flacco.

“Joe will be out there if he can be”, the coach said. However, the ground yardage might be hard to come by.

Coming into the game, the Ravens have lost three straight after starting the season off 3-0.

RUSHING OFFENSE: F. Is it game flow that’s rendered RB Matt Forte (nine carries for 19 yards) invisible, or his absurd early-season workload?

The sobering truth is, Bowles didn’t have any great options – and that’s sad, because the Jets have more quarterbacks (four) than any team in the NFL.

The Ravens took an early 10-0 lead on NY last week, later trailed 20-16, took a 23-20 lead on a short Terrance West touchdown run with just over two minutes to go but then gave up a 66-yard Eli Manning-to-Odell Beckham Jr. scoring connection just 30 seconds later. The status of that trio is uncertain.

The Ravens promoted former Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg (2013-2014) from QBs coach to OC after relieving Marc Trestman of his duties following Week 5. The New York defense has 12 sacks this year, led by Leonard Williams, who has five sacks in 2016. Bowles and his staff again failed to make any meaningful halftime adjustments for the Jets, who have been outscored 51-7 after halftime during their four-game losing streak. I’ve been in this league a short amount of time, but what I have learned is that when you do get your opportunity, you got to jump on it.
