Halloween: Trick-or-treat safety tips for you and your family

When driving children to and from activities, make sure all seat belts are fastened and make the kids exit the vehicle on the curb side.

Deputies with both the Richland and Lexington County Sheriff’s departments say that Halloween is known for being fun, but caution that it can also get you in trouble, or be risky if you don’t pay attention. Parents should make sure their children know never to enter the home of a stranger and should set up a specific time they expect to hear from them.

Although they may be sold out of your favorite costume, George says they have plenty of gear left to keep kids safe while trick or treating. For your kids, make sure they have reflective tape on their costumes and choose ones with light colors.

It’s finally time to trick or treat!

If you are taking your children or younger siblings (or yourself) trick-or-treating, be sure to double check for anything spooky that could be hiding in that candy bag. “Costumes, Trick or Treat, and parties add to the festivities but most importantly, we want Halloween to be a happy, healthy, and safe time for everyone”.

Do not use open flame candles in jack-o-lanterns.

If no sidewalk is available, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.

Encourage children to use face paint and/or make-up (non-toxic) rather than hoods, wigs or masks that can block vision. An keep in mind to always have an adult check a child’s candy before eating it. Older children without supervision should stick to familiar, well-lit areas.

Motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution this Halloween, especially since children will be excited and may forget to cross streets safely.
