Kate McKinnon Sings “Hallelujah” As Hillary Clinton To Open “SNL” Episode

As noted by NPR, during his campaign Trump promised to rescind executive orders, made by his predecessor President Obama, which protect gays and lesbians working for federal contractors.

Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of curiosity surrounding Saturday Night Live’s first post-election cold open, specifically when the weekly sketch show has engaged so fully with the election’s various debates and controversies.

Just last month he told the New Yorker he was not afraid of death and the lyrics of the first song on his latest album featured the words “I’m ready, my Lord”.

Comedian Dave Chappelle was the guest host for the broadcast.

“I’m not giving up and neither should you”, McKinnon, as Clinton, said following her performance.

“And we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one, too”. I don’t like how Alec Baldwin‘s imitating me.’ Really? The group performed “We The People“, in front of a mural of the late founding member Phife Dawg.

Their second performance was “The Space Program” which featured the lines “Time to go left and not right”.

Chappelle, a TV recluse, was a rough but exciting bet to lead a congregation last night. But SNL’s Hillary Clinton cold open should also be required viewing for all people who plan to combat Trump’s rampant racism and xenophobia throughout the next four years, and beyond. But for all the daps and hugs, this wasn’t that. And it wasn’t a protest. The national mood is one of fear and loneliness.

Hillary Clinton not winning the presidency means that we likely won’t get much more of McKinnon as the democratic presidential candidate.
