Coppell’s Kluber finishes third in AL Cy Young race

Though Porcello’s primary pitch is his sinker (against which opponents hit.302), he won largely because he had multiple other options for getting hitters out. Tonight, Max Scherzer won the NL Cy Young Award over two Chicago Cubs pitchers, Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks.

Porcello posted a 3.15 ERA in 223 innings, and beat out third-place finisher Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians, who won the award two years ago under current Sox pitching coach Carl Willis.

Justin Verlander finished in second place in the American League Cy Young Award voting Wednesday behind former teammate Rick Porcello.

It is the second time Verlander has finished second in AL Cy Young voting.

“I honestly don’t care”, Porcello said. “I think he’s taken another step further from what he was in Detroit“. I still haven’t. I didn’t look at statistics.

Scherzer becomes just the second player in Nationals/Montreal Expos history to win the Cy Young. “I felt like I had the weapons and command to get out just about any guy in the lineup”. To be in that category, I can’t express my gratitude. They also finished 2-3 in WHIP just behind Scherzer, but the Nationals’ ace had a sizable lead in innings pitched and strikeouts, and those might have been the decisive factors.

“I’m not going to go out there and blow 98 [mph] by guys or have some nasty wipeout pitch, but I can go after a lineup with my repertoire”, Porcello said. And I could see Ricky winning one down the road. There’s a way to go out and pitch.

In 34 starts this season, Scherzer went 20-7 with a 2.96 ERA and struck out 284 batters.

Porcello, 27, arrived to the Red Sox after the 2014 season in a trade that sent Yoenis Cespedes to the Detroit Tigers.
