You’re hurting, I’m there.
“A president of the United States should not have a racist at his side”, said Sanders, to the loudest applause of the night. Throw in pending and prospective vacancies on the Supreme Court, and you can see why many progressives consider this the worst-case scenario. But people stayed home as a means to voice their displeasure with the candidates. Despite most Republicans supporting the TPP, Trump rabidly opposed both NAFTA and the TPP.
The fact that 50% of voters stayed home can not be ignored.
For Democrats, it is probably better to begin now than four years hence.
Sanders himself issued a statement soon after Donald Trump’s victory, saying, “Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and exhausted of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media”. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has long being poised for a presidential run, and with Clinton likely done for good, she would not have to worry about stepping on any toes if she makes her own run. He was going to stand up to the establishment. That’s a huge reason he won. Democrats say, despite Hickel’s gains, they’re confident Reeves will ultimately win the seat. In Maine, Trump picked up 1 electoral vote for winning Maine’s 2 Congressional District.
“I say to Mr. Trump, from the bottom of my heart … Clinton simply got fewer people to turn out for her than the last Democrat who ran, while Trump appeared to get more than the previous Republican”.
People were exhausted with being labeled as something they were not. The demonization of all Trump supporters served only to anger those who were on the fence. The impact is clear: Voters who decided at the last minute favored Trump by 5 points. So many on the right hide their beliefs for fear of being publicly shamed by those on the left. Nothing. They’ve got nothing. It’s them and their vote.
Sanders, however, has openly supported protesters.
Two other factors, write-in candidates and voters choosing to leave the presidential field blank, could have also contributed to Clinton’s loss. People are exhausted of the shaming and talking down.
To compete against Trumps minority agenda Sanders urges the people to mobilize, educate and to fight back at every occurrence and to “get involved in the political process”. “When the people lead, the leaders follow”. In the months and years to come, those who want to build a true democracy can change the tide. And guess what? Both of those happened this election. I cited that among faculty and administrators, 97.6 percent of donors to political committees, including joint fundraising committees, gave to Democratic and liberal groups, as recorded by the Federal Election Commission’s Advanced Transaction Query by Individual Contributor between early 2007 and late 2015. And by the way, maybe there’s something wrong when we are the only country on Earth not to guarantee health care to all people as a right.
The piece states that DNC staffers booed but he continued and blamed Brazile for the failed election in saying, “You are part of the problem”. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.
JEFFREY SACHS: Because he has been the incredibly courageous head of the incredibly brave-the Progressive Caucus, the Democratic Progressive Caucus, and-Congressional Progressive Caucus.
