High schoolers join anti-Trump protest in Portland

November 17 03:42 2016

Every day in the week since Donald Trump pulled off a stunning presidential election victory, protests have broken out across the country with demonstrators chanting, “Not my president” and “Love trumps hate”.

These demonstrations have largely remained peaceful, according to police, though there have been issues reported at gatherings in Portland, Oakland and Indianapolis, where police said some at the demonstrations threw rocks and bottles and damaged property. One protester was also non-fatally shot.

Portland Mayor Charlies Hales says violent protests aren’t a productive way to create change. Obama said he was “encouraged” by the wide-ranging conversation the pair had, adding that it’s important “we call come together” to face the challenges America faces.

“I will continue to protest and use my First Amendment rights”, he said. We saw some of that with folks who just wanted to break windows and raise hell.

While numerous demonstrations have been peaceful marches against what participants have called Trump’s racist and misogynistic rhetoric, others have devolved into violence, as they did in Portland.

Marshman, clearly tired of sending out Riot Response Team officers night after night to tangle with demonstrators, had a similar message to his boss.

“And now the fact that we’ve got people violently rioting in the streets over the peaceful transfer of power, and they’re not responding in the same way, the media, that is”. “We hope you all reconvene for a peaceful vigil tomorrow”.

“A lot of people didn’t want to see that – in fact, there were fights during the protest”, he says, between protesters who were trying to stop others from smashing vehicle windows and other items. Meanwhile, an even larger group of frustrated Portland citizens gathered to protest downtown. That is, what protests will there be against specific bills once they are proposed and then make it to the floor in Congress? “I knew there was going to be some sort of need for people to take action”.

Trump also suggested during the “60 Minutes” interview, without offering any evidence, that “in some cases, you have professional protesters”. The bulk of the arrests happened on Friday and Saturday evenings as protesters faced off against police.

He added, “The city is worn out and whatever message you’re trying to convey will be lost”.

Hales dismissed Currier’s call for him to resign, saying that those remarks are merely an example of the division the country is facing right now. On Thursday night, police declared that the protest was a “riot” and began to use force to remove people from the streets. “That division has showed up in the passions on both sides of these incidents”. The 42 percent of registered voters who skipped the election still have the right to protest, as does any American who isn’t registered to vote. Protests elsewhere, many of which drew thousands of people, were largely peaceful, with people silently walking with encouraging signs preaching empathy for numerous groups that Trump mocked or targeted during his unusual campaign that upended political protocol yet still managed to hand him the White House.

One group of protesters took over the South Park blocks and staged a sit-in before continuing down Main Street and turning south on Broadway. “Uhh, nothing”, he said of the Occupy movement from several years ago.
