Roger Knight, an attorney for Republican Gov. The process takes up to 30 days if the boards act promptly, the lawsuit says.
The votes are in.
It was clear on election night that North Carolina Gov. Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers held news conferences across the state to declare Cooper the victor, slamming McCrory for his “stubbornness” in refusing to concede.
The governor’s legal team has filed protests over voting irregularities in half of North Carolina’s counties.
“There is no path to victory for Gov. McCrory”, the statement said. If the final margin is under 10,000 votes, McCrory is entitled to a recount, upon his request.
The governor’s news releases of late would seem to suggest otherwise.
McCrory’s campaign made the announcement Tuesday in a news release, reports CBS Raleigh affiliate WNCN reports. Of the Cooper votes, 17,297 were one-stop; 6,768 were Election Day; 405 were absentee; and 176 were provisional.
“This is a very laborious process, it’s a voter-by-voter consideration, looking at each vote to say whether it’s valid or not”. “The State Board of Elections should examine every ballot cast via same-day registration to verify that every vote cast is genuine and legitimate”.
Of the 25 counties that have not submitted their canvass or had it uploaded by the state board, nine are among the 26 that Cooper won, including Forsyth and Guilford.
Could McCrory prevail in recount?
According to the Charlotte Observer, Cotham was among several Democratic lawmakers in the state who have joined together in urging McCrory to accept defeat.
As for whether the legislature’s decision can be reviewed by courts, here’s what that N.C. statute actually says: “The decision of the General Assembly in determining the contest of the election pursuant to this section may not be reviewed by the General Court of Justice”. Ten thousand is just a safe number to ensure accountability, he said.
“We have a lot to do”, Cooper said. “It may be because he needs those fraudulent votes to count in order to win”.
McCrory noted that he was filing for the recount before the completion of the canvassing.
The vote is close enough that McCrory could request and receive an automatic recount; that cannot happen until all the counties have certified their votes. “We are confident that a recount will do nothing to change the fact that Roy Cooper has won this election”, said Cooper for North Carolina campaign manager Rey Nix.
The dispute between McCrory and Cooper has delayed the certification of official results for elections across the state while the gubernatorial contest is resolved.
But McCrory’s challenges thus far have yielded little. The court said the law illegally suppressed black votes.
McCrory’s campaign is challenging election results in about 50 of North Carolina’s counties over supposed instances of voter fraud. If it were a real possibility, they’d be laying the groundwork, Greene suspects.
