It’s the day after Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and an effort to support small, mom-and-pop shops.
“Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity for Alabamians to support local businesses on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving”, Gov. Bentley said.
The store officially opened up on Wednesday and offered deals to customers that made it in the store on Friday.
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce invites residents to support local businesses this Saturday. “So we want to make sure that people are remembering to shop local, to shop small”, Bloom said. That’s why she’s looking forward to sharing it with even more people on Small Business Saturday.
Businesses in areas like Holmes and Jackson County are gearing up for Small Business Saturday.
DJ Johnston, an employee at Doc and Alice Boutique, says shoppers who buy local can also experience better customer service.
“You never know what you’re going to find”. “I have all people that live locally that I’m employing”, said Connie Harter, owner of Retrah. “Hopefully it sticks with people and they remember it, and think about shopping locally all year round”. Often they are generational businesses that have been passed on from one generation to the next.
“For every $250 purchase or a purchase of a coat, they get a free scarf from Italy”, Annie Riechhoff, the owner of the store, said.
This weekend, they’ll have sales throughout the store as consumers take advantage of a more intimate means of shopping during Small Business Saturday, started by American Express back in 2010 to highlight small and local businesses. Owners say their regular customers do a lot of the leg work needed to bring new shoppers to the store windows.
