Brightest supermoon since 1948 fills the sky

As it is a full moon, it will rise at about the same time as sunset so you don’t have to stay up to see it.

Cloudy conditions hampered the efforts of Welsh sky-gazers to see the supermoon as the natural satellite came closer to Earth than it has in decades.

Impressive time-lapse footage of the “super moon” rising above the Australian desert town Alice Springs overnight.

“The moon’s orbit around Earth is slightly elliptical so sometimes it is closer and sometimes it’s farther away”, writes NASA.

The optimal time to view the supermoon was Monday morning at 6:22, but weather permitting, tonight’s moonrise should also be worth watching.

The nights leading up to Monday, Nov. 14 promise a supersized sky show! According to NASA, there won’t be another one this large until 2034.

In case you missed it, last night’s supermoon was a pretty big deal. Supermoons typically cause no extraordinary effects on the Earth but for larger-than-usual tides. As a result, this Supermoon appeared 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than it does at its smallest and was the largest and brightest Supermoon since January 26, 1948.

The term “supermoon” is used to imply that a full moon is at its closest point to earth while orbiting around the planet.

“Those boot prints that the Apollo astronauts left behind, over 45 years ago now, are going to be erased much faster than we expected”, Dr. Petro said.

These mean that the perigee – the closest approach – and full moon are not always in sync.

The Met Office’s United Kingdom forecast suggests it will be cloudy when the supermoon is closest, although it advises people to check their local forecast for the event.
