Berry’s 2 picks carry Chiefs to 29-28 win over Falcons

“You could argue that they’re the best in the league right now”, said Chiefs coach Andy Reid of the Atlanta offense.

After returning an interception 37 yards for a touchdown late in the first half, Berry picked off another pass from Matt Ryan on a 2-point conversion, and his 99-yard return gave the Chiefs the lead.

“There were so many nights that I would cry on their shoulder, trying to make sense of everything that was going on”, Berry said, “and they just kept telling to keep pressing on and that I would be back to play the game the way I want to play the game”.

While Falcons fans are generally conditioned to expect the worst, even the most cynical Falcons fan probably didn’t anticipate Ryan returning to his red zone-turnover habits of 2015, particularly in that situation. Defensively, the Chiefs are yielding 19.5 points and 381.9 total yards per game (260.5 inpassing and 121.4 in rushing).

After the play, Berry made sure that ball was gifted to his mother in the stands. Berry is wearing purple ribbon cleats to honor those in a fight against cancer and wouldn’t it be cool if he did something special in the Chiefs’ game against the Falcons?

“He watches so much film, it’s ridiculous”, linebacker Tamba Hali said of Berry.

Quinn didn’t like his team’s play call against the personnel the Chiefs had on the field. On fourth-and-1 from the Atlanta 3, Reid dialed up a pass to Spencer Ware for the touchdown rather than taking the points, knowing well there was plenty of game left to be played. Tight end Travis Kelce was his favorite target again, catching eight balls for a career-best 140 yards. Matt Ryan looked to connect with Taylor Gabriel over the middle, but Berry read it all the way.

On the first drive of the third quarter, and facing a fourth and one from the Kansas City 45 yard line, receiver Albert Wilson took the direct snap on a fake punt. “I was just thankful for the opportunity”.

For the first time as an National Football League player, Eric Berry returned to his home town of Atlanta, the place where he successfully underwent cancer treatment two years ago, and helped deliver an emotional victory for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Falcons never got the ball back. He also tied Atlanta’s franchise record for longest field goal, first set by Morten Andersen in 1995. They’re often criticised for game management and for just running down the clock, but isn’t that a part of the game? Flacco went 27 for 34 for 258 yards and three scores over the first 30 minutes, and the Ravens yielded only 115 yards and intercepted a Ryan Tannehill pass.

The injuries have forced him into the starting lineup, and he’s opened the last three games at left defensive end.

Tom Compton, a fourth-year veteran out of South Dakota, replaced Matthews.
