Kohli made 62 and six not out to move to 833 points in the third Test, within 14 points of England’s Joe Root in a list led by Australia captain Steve Smith.

After conceding a 134-run first-innings lead, England had their backs firmly against the wall and Monday’s top-order collapse left them with an impossible task to save the game.

England are still hopeful that Hameed can bat in the second innings, and they will also pray that he bats well.

Shami set Woakes up on the very next ball with another bouncer and the batsman gave away a catch to the wicketkeeper while fending off the short delivery on the leg side. “He showed a lot of character to come out and bat”.

He reached his 25th half century off 147 balls as he tucked one towards midwicket fence. The hosts had won the second Test in Visakhapatnam by 246 runs while the first match of the series had ended in a draw at Rajkot. India’s No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara is at the eighth position with 760 rating points. Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid got the two Indian wickets. James Anderson was the last wicket to fall as he was run-out by Jadeja.

Woakes had Murali Vijay gloving a straightforward catch to second slip, to go for a duck – but in six overs before tea, India still moved swiftly to 33 for one. India have to chase down a target of 103 runs to win the thirst Test.

England’s trouble started in the second over of the day as nightwatchman Gareth Batty (0) failed to open his account as he was trapped plumb in-front by a Jadeja arm ball.

However, that will be a task as Indian trio of R Ashwin, Jayant Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja will be waiting to unleash the trial by spin.

The finger on Kohli’s lips was symbolic of the slow death that England are heading towards in this Test and the series.
