Louisville’s Jackson becomes youngest to win Heisman

The Louisville quarterback heaved up a prayer. And then get back there and return a punt.

Lamar Jackson leapt over a loaded field of Heisman Trophy contenders early in the season and by the time he slowed down nobody could catch him.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield finished third with 361 points, Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook finished fourth with 209 points and MI athlete Jabrill Peppers finished fifth with 208 points.

This marks the second time in Bob Stoops’ 18 highly successful seasons at Oklahoma that the Sooners have sent two players to NY as finalists for the Heisman. He also edged Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston as the young est recipient.

“To be able to stand up here with all the former winners, I’m extremely proud to represent this class and Louisville as their first Heisman Trophy victor”, said Jackson, who wore a Louisville-red velvet blazer with shiny black lapels. He became just the third player to pass for 30 touchdowns and rush for 20 in the same season. “Oh snap. It’s insane”.

“For some reason when they called my name my chest started pumping and heart started racing real hard”, he said.

Any doubt was unfounded.

Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson entered this season as a relative unknown, with more than one hurdle to clear. He had three interceptions in a 36-10 loss to Houston and got upset by Kentucky, 41-38.

He led Louisville to four consecutive victories to open the season before losing at No. 2 Clemson.

As for Deshaun, he and the Clemson Tigers have made the playoffs, for the second year in a row. “Anyone can come and enjoy each other, enjoy the atmosphere of watching it here and also enjoy some good food”.

His mother has been his number one supporter since his days as a Pop Warner league star, and she hasn’t missed even one MI game.

“I don’t care where you put it man”, Jackson said with a laugh. He wasn’t the best player on the best team this season, but there is a good chance he might be in 2017 and that’s a good way to win the Heisman.
