Texans QB Brock Osweiler loses starting job to Tom Savage

Tom Savage played just two full seasons in college, for two different schools in a five-year span, after two transfers. Unfortunately, the decision to sign him comes with an even bigger price.

Brock Osweiler has been so bad this season that he’s ruining a perfectly good sports cliche.

Benching Brock Osweiler was not a one-game decision.

Houston trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter and Nick Novak made his fourth field goal before Miller bulled in for the go-ahead touchdown.

The Texans can afford to lose to the Cincinnati Bengals since they’ll still clinch the division if they beat the Titans in Week 17 thanks to their superior record in the AFC South. They would stuff the run on third down and Texans would turn the ball over on downs after an incomplete pass on 4th down.

As for Tom Savage.

The Texans looked to have scored on Savage’s first drive, but Akeem Hunt fumbled and the ball was placed at the half-yard line.

The former Broncos quarterback, who left Denver for a lucrative contract in Texas in the offseason, was yanked from Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after throwing two interceptions in the second quarter.

And yet, Houston gave him $37 million guaranteed and $18 million per season. “He’s judged by wins and getting his team into the end zone”. They were exhausted of going too cheap and too short-term at QB and panicked in search of a younger upgrade. Lord knows if he’s the better option going forward-he was good yesterday, going 23-of-36 for 260 yards in relief-but I think the Texans about know what they have in Osweiler, and it’s not good.

Oh, and he had also led them to first place in the fantastically mediocre AFC South. The Jaguars would get two more chance to sustain a drive.

“Obviously my rookie year, go back to that time, that terrible moment of my career”. One-year, $10 million deals and four-year, $30 million deals come with easier outs.

Houston won’t find a trade partner for Osweiler next year.

Andrew Luck and Marcus Mariota are legitimate franchise quarterbacks for Indianapolis and Tennessee, respectively.

Seven hundred and thirty-five days after his previous National Football League game, Tom Savage was prepared to quarterback the Houston Texans to a comeback victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Longer term, this casts more doubt on O’Brien.

Osweiler has a seasonal completion rate of 59.7 percent.
