Electoral College to cast votes for president today

December 20 00:15 2016

The institution’s 538 electors, chosen by state parties, are expected to cast official ballots for president and vice president at meetings arranged in every state capitol and the District of Columbia. The electors were petitioned to follow their conscience and deny Trump the presidency by voting for someone else.

The last of the 50 states gave Bernie Sanders his first electoral college vote that counted. Under the procedure set out by the 12th Amendment to the Constitution, that formal process is scheduled for January 6.

Some presidential electors in Maryland support changes to the Electoral College after seeing two Democratic presidential candidates in the last 16 years win the USA popular vote, but lose the election.

To prevent Mr Trump from becoming president, activists needed to convince at least 37 Republican electors to abandon their candidate.

There have been instances of large numbers of faithless electors opting to vote against their state’s wishes, but the examples are from long ago.

A number of pledged Hillary Clinton electors in fact defected, or aimed to defect, from voting for her on December 19.

Must electors vote for whoever won the popular vote in the state? Trump narrowly defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the race.

In Colorado, Democratic elector Michael Baca attempted to cast his vote for John Kasich (as part of the failed scheme to convince Trump electors to back a moderate Republican), but he was dismissed and replaced by an alternate, who voted for Clinton.

“All the electors at this college convening elected Hillary Clinton and obviously she’s not going to be the next president of the United States, so that’s sad”, the mayor said. This is the highest number of faithless electors in any presidential election, but it still didn’t impact the outcome as a lot of them backed another Democrat choice. It’s all related to the U.S. Electoral College.

“The standard explanation for the Electoral College is people didn’t quite trust the masses – and these were supposed to be the elite, the Electors”, Dr. Provizer said. It found “widespread Democratic aggravation with the electoral process but little expectation that the hustle of anti-Trump maneuvering can derail him”.

Under threat of ‘faithless electors,’ Electoral College voting gets underway
