Go, Christmas tree: City turning holiday evergreens into mulch

December 30 07:31 2016

One in every 34 Christmas tree fires is fatal. It’s open Monday 8 a.m.to noon, and Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m.to 4 p.m. City dwellers, however, will need to make use of chipping and shredding services, which have become festive events in their own right in some neighborhoods. Western Disposal will also host curbside pickup of trees on Thursday and on January 12 and January 26.

The trees are processed by the city’s mulch grinding machines, which produce a ground cover that residents can pick up for free throughout the year, said Penny Morin, collections manager with the city’s solid waste department. Trees taken to these locations can not have ornaments on them.

If you do not have space in your brown bin you should place your Christmas tree to the side of your bin on collection day and it will be collected.

Trees should be clear of all ornaments, garland, and stands, and placed at the curb but not in the street. The most common way of disposing an old Christmas tree is taking it to a local landfill.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said: “Recycling in Camden is really easy for residents this Christmas with plenty of tree collection points across the borough”.

Here are some recycling options and tips on what to do with your tree after the holidays. The town of Easton on the Eastern Shore has taken discarded Christmas trees to rebuild Poplar Island. The trees will be chipped and used in Rasmussen Park.

Lights, ornaments, tinsel, and other decorations should be completely removed by residents before hauling and dropping off the trees in the designated area. The National Christmas Tree Association is urging people to stop throwing out their real Christmas trees and to start recycling them instead. The cost for the pickup service is $10 per tree. Saturdays; and 8 a.m.to noon and 1 p.m.to 5 p.m.

The City’s Highway Department will pick-up trees through January 31st, weather permitting.
