Iran has so often proclaimed that it will wipe Israel off the map that it has become a mantra of its kakistocracy. “And we took the position that we did when it was put to a vote”. For close to a generation, ever since the historic Begin-Sadat agreements leading to peace with Egypt and the Rabin-Hussein accords and the peace with Jordan, the peace process has been frozen.

Not only did the December 23 resolution label Israel an global outlaw, by implication it also created what the Palestinians have forever sought: moral equivalence with Israel. That they made no meaningful effort to intervene at any point illustrates starkly that this was an intentional effort at personal payback by an outgoing president against an Israeli leader whom he apparently despises.

All the while, the United States was supporting Israel with foreign aid far beyond any other nation. It was a rare victory for an worldwide community that has been consistently thwarted by Barack Obama’s limitless indulgence for Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s insatiable appetite for Palestinian land.

The resolution is largely a symbolic message as it has no enforcement or sanctioning mechanism.

Obama’s repulsive move against Israel really takes the prize. That recalcitrance has been marked by a complete refusal to make real peace, interspersed with wars against Israel by its neighbors in 1948, 1967 and 1973, as well as a continuous campaign of terrorism against the Jewish state and its citizens. Israeli self-restraint was never going to magically produce peace. Yet Obama’s position on opposing the Israeli settlements and promoting a two-state solution is the same as his White House predecessors. It also prompted suspicions that David might be playing Goliath for a fool.

There is no goal to further Israeli expansion, other than to crowd Palestinians out of what remains of their homeland. The Palestinian Authority has become the ideal racket. Yet these qualify as mere slights. They used to have a great friend in the US, but. not anymore. How dare the United States not veto a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel for continuing to build permanent, militarily protected, illegal settlements on land claimed by the indigenous Palestinians. Secretary of State John Kerry’s subsequent headline-grabbing speech directly criticizing Israel elaborates on that admission.

The same is true of President Obama’s new measures to punish Russia, which his administration describes as a response to Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committee and some other American individuals and organizations as well as Russia’s broader interference in the USA political process. Goliath, its love unrequited, foots the bill.

The Obama administration knows all about standing “idly by” – that was its all-but-explicit policy toward other troubles in the Middle East. Obama came into office with one foreign policy lodestar – “Not George Bush” – and has stuck with it mulishly no matter how much the facts on the ground demanded flexibility. And good riddance. Henceforth, the United States will give Israel what it wants, without even the appearance of expecting a quid pro quo. Obama’s obvious motive was to stick one finger in Netanyahu’s eye and another in Trump’s eye. These are broadly consistent with the long-standing U.S. interpretation of a two-state settlement, even if containing an update here and an elaboration there.

As but one example, the infamous Zionism is Racism thrust of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 3379, adopted by the U.N. on November 10, 1975, “determine [d] that Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination”.

In return for what?

Kerry delivered an extraordinarily condescending speech maligning Israel for the settlements, saying they have jeopardized peace in the Middle East. He added that no administration has been as supportive of Israel as the Obama administration.
