Samsung Reveals QLED 4K TVs At CES Minus The Visual Clutter

But just as impressive is the way one cable provides a link to all the TV’s connections, letting owners keep that on-the-wall look neat and clean without a mess of cables hanging from the bottom.

The new displays use advanced quantum dot technology.

QLED refers to Quantum Dot LEDs. While all three TVs offer similar functionality, the preview event Samsung held Tuesday night ahead of its CES 2017 keynote focused on the flagship Q9 QLED screen. That means blacks truly are black, rather than the hazy off-grey you often get on cheaper tellies. That leaves Samsung’s rival LG as the only manufacturer of OLED, and Samsung itself with plenty of motivation to work on an alternative like QLED.

Essentially, it’s a question of Organic LED versus standard ol’ LED. The curved TV, once considered the whizzbang tech that would save televisions, is dead.

Okay, so what about Quantum Dot?

Like Samsung, you can always bet that LG will have a bunch of new TVs and home appliances at CES.

The reality is that QLED is still LED/LCD but it has narrowed the picture quality gap on OLED and is cheaper to make.

No SUHD: In retiring the SUHD designation, Samsung is replacing its SUHD lineup with the MU8 and MU9 series, which drop their predecessors’ quantum-dot displays while still delivering 1,000-nit peak brightness, Varner said.

“Although it is hard to tell exact timing of release of luminescent QLED product at this moment, we have made a significant progress from technical aspect.” said Vice-President Han Jong-hee of Samsung Electronics who attended this meeting. One of its model called “MU” is a high-class LCD TV that is created to target medium and high-priced TV markets. The overall effect of this is to produce a much lower cable clutter level when one of the TVs is mounted to a wall or sitting in a living room. And unlike OLED, it also won’t be as prone to discoloration over time. The future is going to have some sweet televisions in it. They will all be 4K Ultra HD.

When will QLED TVs be released in the UK?

Samsung’s recently released CFG70 and CF791 Quantum Dot curved monitors will also be showcased at CES, alongside its next generation of high-resolution monitors, scheduled for release in early 2017.

Unlike a year ago, Samsung’s best line of TV, the Q9, has a flat instead of a curved screen.

Samsung hasn’t announced availability, but expect the Q9, and the less expensive Q8 and Q7, which have uglier finishes, larger port replacement cords, and curved options, to appear in stores in the spring. By moving to metallic quantum dots, Samsung officials say the company is now able to generate a full spectrum of quantum colours all the way to 2000 nits, giving the TVs the largest colour space of any TV in the world.
