Team USA will play Team Canada in the final today

January 06 04:40 2017

The championship game was played in Montreal, Canada and it took a shootout for United States of America to win.

The overtime was back-and-forth with plenty of chances for both teams to win, but Parsons, who plays for the London Knights, and Canada’s Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips saw that the game went to a shootout.

“He has great skill, great hands”, United States defenceman Charlie McAvoy said of Terry. On a power play to open the third period, Nicolas Roy had the time and space to put a wrist shot from the left circle into the top corner of the net for the 3-2 lead.

That occurrence, at the 1:42 mark of the first period, created the raucous atmosphere we’ve been waiting for at this tournmaent-the one that would have the home side feeling like the whole nation truly was watching. Each team started off a bit apprehensive, but Canada quickly took the reins. Team Canada outscored its opponents 44-14 and because the Czechs also finished 5-0-2, their 2-2 draw with Canada meant the gold medal would be decided on goals for and goals against. He beat Parsons and suddenly it was 2-0 and the crowd was rocking.

The wild third period continued with another goal just 39 seconds later as McAvoy glided down the left side and coolly slid a backhand pass to Bellows, who blew a one-timer past Hart to claw the Americans back within one.

Sometimes, a goaltending change can swing momentum for a team and for Canada, it did absolute wonders.

Grand Forks native Grant Potulny was an assistant on the team and will take a gold medal home to Minnesota, where he’s an assistant. On the power play, Thompson fed the puck to Fox at the point, his shot was deflected into the net by Bellows to tie the game. He scored on all three attempts to down bronze medalist Russian Federation one day earlier, then beat the Canadians with yet another five-hole dagger.

The Canadians took another two-goal lead at 4:05. Parsons helped the London Knights win the Memorial Cup last season and was selected in the second round (54th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Gauthier led the way for the red-and-white in the final frame, scoring twice in 3:19, sandwiched around a Simon Stransky goal that temporarily made it a one-goal game again.

Canada would trip themselves up a bit in the period when a bit of confusion led to a too many men on the ice penalty, and the Americans would capitalize. However, coach Dominique Ducharme chose to pull Ingram and replaced him with Carter Hart, who came off the bench and stopped all 28 shots the Swedes fired at him the rest of the game. Team USA would complete the comeback at 7:07, courtesy of White. The teams traded chances throughout the game, and especially in the third period and overtime.
