Trump repeatedly refused to take questions for CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta and accused CNN of being “fake news”.
During his remarks, Trump took questions from reporters but got into a shouting match with CNN’s Jim Acosta after refusing to take his question.
The showdown between Trump and Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta happened after the president-elect answered questions about a tweet alleging connections between the USA and Nazi Germany.
Acosta wouldn’t have raised his voice or repeated his question if Trump answered it the first time.
“You’re attacking us, can you give us a question?”
There is a tradition of honeymoon between the newly elected U.S. president and the media, which implies that the latter would abstain from any harsh criticism toward the leader of the United States within roughly the first 100 days in the office. Acosta asked during the Wednesday press conference.
“Mr. President-elect that is not appropriate”, Acosta interjected.
BuzzFeed, a pop culture site with an overlay of news, is not exactly friendly to Trump.
“I want to thank a lot of the news organisations here today”, Trump said pointing to those who did not publish the dossier.
Trump also famously had an ongoing tiff with former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, which started in 2015 when Kelly moderated a Republican debate and the two got into an exchange after she pressed him on his treatment of women. To shout down a journalist, refuse to take his question and label his news organization as “fake news” serves no good objective.
Trump had scolded CNN during Wednesday’s press conference, because he doesn’t like the way the network handled coverage of a controversial Russian Federation dossier that was eventually published by BuzzFeed. The question was later asked by ABC News reporter Cecilia Vega.
However, CNN defended its reporting on the operations of the government, which it described as vastly different than Buzzfeed’s decision to publish unsubstantiated memos.
Because Trump’s staffers and supporters were blocked by a line of reporters crowded into the packed room, it was hard to differentiate them from members of the press.
Matt Gertz continued: “Trump treats reporters like conquered foes who he can manhandle at will”.
CNN continues to stand by its publication of the story, which it distinguishes from BuzzFeed’s publishing of the original document, which CNN referenced but did not quote from or detail.
