Her husband Mateen gunned down 49 people in the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on June 12 past year.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the decision to prosecute Salman was part of officials’ promises to fully investigate the case. Salman Mateen will be transferred from Northern California to the Middle District of Florida, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. He adds that she is being charged by federal authorities in Florida. Hours later, authorities were at Salman and the shooter’s home, ordering Salman to come out with her hands up. The boy’s name is Zakariaya Omar Mateen.
Salman revealed she’d been with Mateen when he bought ammunition, but says that wasn’t unusual for the security guard. Salman was taken into custody at her house outside of San Francisco, according to the New York Times.
Law enforcement agents repeatedly questioned Salman after the June 12 massacre to figure out what role she might have played in the attack. According to The Los Angeles Times, she met Mateen online and they were married on September 29, 2011.
Mateen’s mother called Salman at around 2 a.m. Sunday, waking her up and asking if she knew where Mateen was.
She insisted she was never aware of what he was planning. Her attorney, Linda Moreno of Tampa, said Ms Salman had no prior knowledge of the events that would tragically happen in June past year.
Salman, 30, is slated to make a court appearance in San Francisco on Tuesday, CBS News reported. A law enforcement source said the couple exchanged, “I love you”. But in a mass shooting case, Coates said the sympathy factor before a grand jury could be outweighed by “the number of victims and the number of other people whose lives could have been saved”.
The New York Times first reported Monday’s arrest.
