Lewis had told NBC’s “Meet the Press” he doesn’t see Trump as a “legitimate” president and that he won’t attend the inauguration on Friday.
Trump’s response to Lewis is predictably being ill-received, with many outraged that Trump would offer so little respect to the renowned civil rights leader.
But Senator Stabenow will be attending, despite calling Trump’s comments disgusting. “It looks as if he was looking for an excuse”.
President-elect Trump fired back on Twitter that Lewis – who quickly became the focal point of the controversy – was “all talk, no action”.
Lewis’ decision to skip the inauguration prompted a Twitter tirade from the president-elect, who said Lewis should focus on his Atlanta-based district.
Trump replied to Lewis’s allegations, questioning his prestige and performance as a lawmaker, other Democratic congressmen reacted indignantly and there are already 42 of them who will boycott his inauguration.
In a statement, Massachusetts Congresswoman Katherine Ryan said she can not contribute “to the normalisation of the President-elect’s divide rhetoric by participating in the inauguration”. He also says he hopes Trump’s behavior will change.
On Martin Luther King Day, Trump met with King’s son, Martin Luther King III, at Trump Tower to discuss voting rights. “I hope they’re gonna give us their tickets”, Trump said.
“Instead, President-elect Trump has validated our fears with his cabinet picks, tweets and attacks”. How do you forget if you go to an inauguration?
Rep. Sean Duffy said Tuesday he is disappointed that more than three dozen Democratic lawmakers have said they are boycotting the inauguration, comparing them to children unable to accept defeat.
